Welcome to the #SaferWC Initiative

#SaferWCape is an optimistic movement aimed at bringing about positive change in the Western Cape by building support for the devolution of power within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Why do we support the devolution of Western Cape SAPS? Devolution does not mean creating isolation but instead supporting the police. Since each province, metropolitan area, or local municipality has unique challenges, safety and protection should not solely lie with the national SAPS. It’s clear that the current SAPS structure is no longer effective in addressing these issues, which is why we feel it’s time for fresh ideas and a new approach. This is precisely what the #SaferWC campaign is all about. The challenges facing the Western Cape SAPS pose a direct threat to our society and contribute to the overall crime rate in South Africa.

What will be the benefits of a devolved Western Cape?

We believe that by devolving power within the SAPS, we can create a safer, more secure environment for everyone in the Western Cape. With a focus on the benefits of devolution, we aim to bring about a brighter future for the region, one where communities can feel safe and secure.

    • Increased accountability
    • Better resource management
    • Improving community-police relations
    • Provides local communities with a greater voice in the management of public safety
    • Ensuring that the needs and concerns of the people are heard and addressed

The use of universities and private companies can also play a role in supporting the devolution of safety and protection responsibilities. For example, one potential solution to the backlog in forensic services is partnering with universities or outsourcing some DNA analysis.
