In his reply to the State of the Nation Debate President Cyril Ramaphosa said the expert panel report into the July unrest is indeed damning. But while this report continues to make headlines, it’s the ongoing tensions between the Police Minister Bheki Cele and the National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole that are grabbing much of the attention. Yesterday Cele had to withdraw remarks that accused Sitole of hatching a plan with EFF Leader Julius Malema to oust him. There are calls from some MPs in parliament calling for Cele’s removal at the back of the unrest report which paints a picture of an overwhelmed SAPS, and says police ran out of supplies such as rubber bullets and teargas canisters. But for how long can the tensions between the two be allowed to continue. Let’s speak to Ian Cameron Spokesperson for Action Society with a special focus on the SAPS.
