Action Society instructed their legal team to lodge a formal complaint against the South African Police Service (SAPS) with the Public Protector. For too long now mismanagement and maladministration within the SAPS undermined South Africans’ rights to equality, fair administrative action and our access to courts.
The police’s Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) computer systems has been down since June 2020 resulting in a DNA testing backlog approaching the 200,000 mark and the firearms register being inactive — to highlight only two of the many problems. Our justice system are being jeopardised and thousands of pending cases will never be submitted to court because the police already lost over eight million pieces of evidence.
Add your name to Action Society’s complaint that will address:
- Contract management and the awarding of tenders;
- The reactivation of the FDA’s computer systems (specifically so that DNA testing can resume); and
- For the amendment of the DNA Act to be signed, allowing that buccal samples for a DNA register may be taken from convicted criminals.
We don’t need another police committee policing the police. Government must bring the scapegoats to terms and replace them with competent persons who can reinstate SAPS’s functionality and evidently justice.
