Action Society welcomes the sentencing of Charles Appolis to 22 years direct imprisonment for the brutal murder of Nadia Lotz, bringing a measure of accountability more than three years after her killing on 4 March 2023. According to the magistrate, the fact that Appolis showed no remorse and wasted the court’s time in various ways over the past three years didn’t count in the accused’s favor.
Lotz was attacked while seated in the front passenger seat of a vehicle. The court heard that Appolis, who was seated behind her, leaned forward in the confined space of the moving vehicle and stabbed her fifteen times before slitting her throat. At the time of the attack, Nadia’s best friend was driving the vehicle and attempted to maintain control of the car while trying to fend off the assault.
In a desperate attempt to escape the violence, Nadia opened the door and leapt from the moving vehicle. She collapsed on the road with catastrophic injuries and died shortly afterwards despite efforts by members of the public to assist her.
The case was marked by a lengthy and difficult court process. The trial formally commenced in July 2025 and was preceded by a prolonged investigation period. During the proceedings, the accused denied responsibility and presented shifting versions of events, including allegations that Nadia’s best friend was responsible for the attack and that he had himself been injured while attempting to help her.
These claims were tested against eyewitness testimony, forensic evidence and photographic documentation of the scene. The court ultimately rejected the accused’s version and found him guilty of murder earlier this year, 1 084 days after Nadia’s killing.
Kaylynn Palm, Head of Action Society’s Action Centre in the Western Cape, said the sentencing represents an important step toward justice after a long and painful process. “This sentence confirms that brutal violence must carry real consequences. Nadia lost her life in a horrifying attack and her family has had to endure years of court proceedings to reach this point. While no sentence can restore what was taken from them, accountability is essential for justice to have meaning.”
Palm also noted the devastating impact the crime has had on the children connected to the tragedy. “The deepest tragedy is that the biggest victims of this crime are Nadia and Charles Appolis’ children. They have effectively lost both parents as a result of this act of violence. These are the silent victims who will carry the consequences of this crime for the rest of their lives.”
Action Society reiterated that improving conviction rates remains one of the most effective ways to reduce violent crime.
“When the justice system investigates properly, prosecutes effectively and ensures that perpetrators are sentenced, it sends a clear message that violence will have consequences,” Palm said. “Certainty of punishment remains the most powerful deterrent available to any justice system.”
