Action Society advises Cele suspension during Hawks investigation – Bheki risks good cops with reckless “shoot first, ask later” comments

It is clear from another reckless comment and the Hawks’ intention to re-investigate the minister of police regarding fraudulent leases that Bheki Cele is not fit to serve in his position.

“Bheki Cele’s comments to the Western Cape Police to “…shoot first and ask questions later…” is just a ploy to gain favour on the ground. It won’t work,” said Ian Cameron, Director of Community Safety at Action Society. “He is throwing good cops under the bus.

“Experienced cops disagree with Cele. There is a strong feeling amongst them that Cele will desert them when push comes to shove, and they have to defend their reasonable grounds after using deadly force,” said Cameron. “He should stop throwing around reckless statements. He has no idea what it takes to be a good cop and should not be the minister of police.”

In light of the Hawks re-opening the investigation about lease irregularities against Cele and keeping his continued failure as Minister of Police in mind, Action Society will write a letter to President Ramaphosa advising him that he should suspend Cele pending the investigation.
