Action Society approaches SAHRC about Nehawu strike, proposes action against Ministers of Health and Police

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has a duty to investigate and act on the incidents of intimidation during Nehawu’s strike, which was finally stopped by a court order. But, the SAPS should have intervened and arrested the union leader for inciting violence before it got out of control.

“Why was the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, shining in his absence during the illegal strike of essential workers?” said Ian Cameron, Director of Community Safety at Action Society. “We saw no leadership from the police or government while the most vulnerable South Africans, including babies and toddlers, died.”

The SAPS must intervene if people refuse to adhere to the court’s rulings.

As a watchdog for the most vulnerable members of society, Action Society is taking action by lodging a complaint with the Human Rights Commission against Nehawu and its leadership. The purpose of the complaint is to hold them accountable criminally for their actions, which endangered the lives of the most vulnerable in society and caused their deaths.

Furthermore, Action Society will consult with its legal team to explore the possibility of a class action against Nehawu and the Ministers of Healthcare and Police for not ensuring the safety of the most vulnerable and sick if the strike has caused any deaths.

“We cannot stand by and watch as the most vulnerable members of our society suffer because of the actions of a few,” said Cameron. “Let us stand together and demand that our rights to essential healthcare services be respected and upheld.”
