“It is a terrible shame on everyone who sees a woman getting beat up and stands by, doing nothing,” said Kaylynn Palm, Action Centre coordinator at Action Society. “We can only win the fight against gender-based violence if people act against it.”
Twitter was ablaze today with a video of a man repeatedly beating a woman in the street outside a building while cars continued to drive by. It is not clear where the incident took place.
In 2022, up to September, South Africa saw 40 469 reported cases of assault to do grievous bodily harm against women, an increase of about 16% from the previous year.
“We call on the police to start a manhunt for this abuser and make an example of him,” said Palm. “We urge anyone with information to come forward and take a stand against gender-based violence. We will not stand for anyone using violence against a vulnerable person.”
