Action Society has been fighting for justice for Leighché (Leigh) Thomas ever since her family turned to us for help when police investigations stalled after she was allegedly drugged and raped in December 2021. Now, more than 3.5 years later, the trial of the man allegedly known as the Paarl Photographer Rapist will finally begin on Monday at the Paarl Regional Court.
Leigh, then just 19 years old and hoping to build a modelling career, was allegedly lured by the accused — a well-known photographer in the Paarl area — under the false promise of a portfolio-building photoshoot. Once in a secluded location, he allegedly gave her alcohol laced with an intoxicating substance, rendering her defenceless, and raped her. It is also alleged that he used the same method to target and rape another woman.
Action Society commends Leigh for her extraordinary courage in choosing to waive her right to anonymity, becoming the public face of this fight for justice in order to shine a light on the failures of the system and stand up for other victims of gender-based violence.
When Leigh reported the alleged crime, the accused had already fled the area. For almost a year, there was no movement in the case. In 2022, her family contacted Action Society. Our investigation team conducted a thorough probe, worked closely with SAPS, and tracked the alleged suspect to Stellenbosch, where he was hiding and working at a car dealership. In February 2023, our efforts led directly to his arrest.
In November 2023, the matter was almost struck from the court roll when the docket allegedly “went missing” — only to be found two hours later. At that time, the accused remained in custody on a separate rape charge. Yet in April 2025, he was granted bail in that other matter, meaning he now walks free while awaiting trial for both cases.
“This case is a glaring example of how the justice system continues to fail victims of gender-based violence,” said Juanita du Preez, spokesperson for Action Society. “Leigh has endured more than 3.5 years of delays, fear, and trauma, while her alleged attacker has been allowed to walk free. Her decision to come forward publicly is an act of immense bravery, and Action Society will not stop until he is convicted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
Action Society continues to demand NO BAIL for perpetrators of violence against women and children. We will be present in court to support Leigh and ensure her story is heard.
