Action Society mandated to oversee case of pregnant woman beaten to death with hammer

Action Society has been mandated to oversee the murder case of Melanie Stoffels, who was brutally killed whilst pregnant.

Stoffels, a 26-year-old woman from Heideveld was beaten to death with a hammer on 7 August 2024 in an alleged coordinated attack or ‘hit’, paid for by her ex-girlfriend. She was pregnant at the time. Her body was found near a footbridge. The attacker handed himself over to the police on 11 August, and the ex-girlfriend was arrested later that month.

The two perpetrators accused of her brutal murder, appeared before the Athlone Magistrates court on 30 October and the matter was postponed to 7 February 2025 for further investigation.

“We will not rest until there is justice for Melanie. Family and friends described Melanie as a beautiful girl. We welcome the Heideveld community’s involvement in this case. Thus far a petition has been signed asking that bail be denied for both the accused. We have seen time and again how community involvement helps to get the wheels of justice turning. We call on the community to continue their support to Melanie’s family,” said Action Society’s Kaylynn Palm
