Action Society has taken on the case of Nomasonto Felicity Modzanane, 50, who was killed by a man who struck her with his car in Randfontein on 21 February 2024.
Nomasonto was an employee at the Randfontein Magistrate Court and had just finished her shift. She was walking across the street behind the court when the driver struck her with his car.
As seen on CCTV footage, which has been circulating online, the suspect was speeding directly toward Nomasonto and then reversing over after he first struck her. The cruel footage has convinced the community and witnesses to believe that this was not an accident but rather a purposeful act. She leaves behind three children and a grandson.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, but no one has been arrested yet. Nomasonto’s daughter said her mother received death threats days before she was killed.
“My mother was a very expressive and friendly person. However there were a few people who did not wish her well. Family members from my younger sister’s father’s family sent her threats, telling her that her days are numbered. I don’t think that my mother personally knew the person that drove over her, but I know that they live in the same community, five minutes away from each other, which is bizarre.”
“Action Society will continue to put pressure on this case until we can get justice for Nomasonto and give her family the answers they seek,” said Head of Action Society’s Action Centre, Kaylynn Palm.
