The family of Lekeasha Marthinus will never forget 5 November – the day she was killed from a beer bottle to her head – allegedly by her boyfriend.
The 18-year-old woman from Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, was holding her nine-month-old baby in her arms when the full bottle of beer knocked her out. Following the incident, her friends tried to wake her up, but she did not respond. She was rushed to hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The family told Action Society the suspect was arrested and has made an appearance in court.
“Murder is murder,” said a family member. “We want justice for Lekeasha but also the sake of her poor baby. We wanted him locked up, but we heard that he was released.
“We want answers from Bheki Cele. Justice failed Lekeasha, and we will not stop. So please, Action Society, help us get justice for her,” she said.
Following the murder of the teenager, the family and community members made their voices heard and took to the streets to protest. However, according to the family, nothing had come from the action.
The family says the couple had been together for almost two years and had a baby boy. The parents are heartbroken, as Lekeasha is the third child they have lost. Their son was murdered in July last year.
The family has reached out for assistance and mandated Action Society with the matter.
