The few minutes spent stopping at a gate, waiting for it to open and getting inside can leave you distracted and stationary.
Prepare before you reach your entrance.
Before you arrive
Have your remote or access tag ready. Avoid stopping outside while searching through a handbag, checking messages or making a call.
If you use private security, save the control-room number and know how to activate any panic function.
Look before you stop
As you approach, check for:
- an unfamiliar vehicle near the entrance;
- a person waiting close to the gate;
- someone following you;
- an object blocking the driveway; or
- anything that looks different from normal.
If something concerns you, continue driving. Do not stop to investigate or get out of the vehicle.
Drive to a busy, well-lit place, a security point or another location where you can call for assistance. Do not lead someone you suspect is following you into your property.
While the gate is opening
Keep your doors locked and leave enough space to move away where possible.
Watch what is happening around you instead of focusing only on the gate. Once inside, wait for the gate to close fully before getting out of your vehicle.
If the entrance is shared, do not assume that a person or vehicle following closely behind belongs there.
If you find signs of a break-in
Do not enter to check whether the intruder has left. Move away and contact your security provider or the police.
Property can be replaced. Entering an uncertain situation can place you in immediate danger.
