“The very people who are supposed to enforce the law in South Africa turn out to be criminals themselves. This is not at all surprising, but it is, however, very concerning to see that some of them are tried for violent crimes, and even murder. The Tshwane Metro Police is facing the same issue, with many of their members walking around with criminal records as well. We encourage all South Africans to avoid the Metro Police in these areas as far as they can until these issues are addressed,” said Director of Community Safety, Ian Cameron.
This comes after a report from the DA which revealed that 167 City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers have criminal records. The report found that 250 officers were indeed found to have criminal records. Of these, 83 are awaiting trial leaving 167 officers having criminal records. Some of the crimes range from house break-ins, murder, fraud at the licensing department and driving whilst intoxicated.
