Ban the #BlueLightMafia
Punish the #BlueLightEight

before you become their next victim.

It has been more than a year since the grievous roadside assault of a civilian by Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP Protection Unit – the #BlueLightEight – and still there is no justice. The internal disciplinary hearing has been postponed time and again for frivolous reasons and has not moved a millimetre ahead. The court hearing has been postponed at least six times, with the accused questioning the validity of the viral video capturing the assault at the last appearance

While all eight accused have been back at work since October 2023 after a brief suspension, the lives of the victim and witnesses have come to a standstill. They cannot commit to further employee training to further their careers because they have to attend court cases and disciplinary hearings. This has enormous financial implications for their lives.

Furthermore, the victims fear for their lives as reports of whistleblowers being gunned down regularly make headlines.

It seems that the South African Police Service is unwilling to take the behaviour of the VIP Protection Units seriously. Police Minister Mchunu approved an increased budget of more than R2 billion for these services, which amounts to more than 50% of the protection and security services programme.

This leads to only one question: when will you be next

By completing the form below, you will send a letter to the Executive Director of IPID (Independent Police Investigative Directorate) and the Minister of Police, pressuring them to make progress in this case a priority.

Help us ban the #BlueLightMafia by punishing the #BlueLightEight before you become a victim, too.

RE: South African Police Service (SAPS) VIP Protection Unit criminal defence (CAS number: Sandton CAS 80/07/2023)

I am a concerned citizen of South Africa. It has come to my attention that, more than a year after the incident, there has been no discernible progress in the disciplinary hearing of the above case. I have further noted that the suspension of the eight accused VIP Protection Unit members has run out, and they are back at work.

Furthermore, the South African Police Service recently approved an increased budget of R2 billion for the VIP Protection of ministers for the next year.

The above statements lead me to believe that protecting ordinary South Africans and the behaviour of police officers is not a priority or even a concern for the South African Police Service.

Find this letter as an official complaint and a request to prioritise and expedite the disciplinary hearing of the mentioned case.
