Delay in statistics release underlines a bigger delay pattern – Action Society

Action Society today launched a new survey to determine the scope of justice delays in South Africa. Following the trend in delaying justice, the publication of quarterly crime statistics scheduled for Friday was also cancelled at the last minute.

Find the survey here.

“Around 90% of violent criminals are never caught or rehabilitated. If they are caught, delaying tactics further traumatise victims and families, leading to many of them considering giving up on justice,” explains Action Society spokesperson Juanita du Preez.

In the cases where Action Society is involved, we see constant delays.

  • Alwaba Sondara was murdered in January 2021. The trial will only commence in June 2024.
  • Siphokazi Booi was brutally murdered in August 2021. Her trial only started in May 2024.
  • Rev Liezel de Jager was murdered in October 2021. Her husband was only arrested in November 2023.
  • Nosiphiwo James was murdered in May 2022, and her trial continues.
  • Bokgabo Poo and Mia Botha were murdered in 2022, mere weeks apart. No arrests have been made.
  • The Paarl Photographer Rapist was released in one case after fleeing another case. His victim is a shadow of her former self.

Action Society calls on South Africans to participate in their survey to determine the scope of justice delays in South Africa by visiting Action Society’s website.
