DO YOU THINK SOUTH AFRICA IS BECOMING A POLICE STATE?
The Blue Light Mafia incident that occurred in July 2023 has sparked serious concerns and conversations about police brutality and police officers being held above the law.
A police state is described as a state where the Police exercise an extreme level of control over civil society and liberties.
With police brutality going unchecked and Minister Bheki Cele, through proposed changes to the IPID act, trying to gain control over the only body mandated to keep SAPS accountable, the reality is that we are entering a chapter where Cele will have complete control of SAPS and IPID with parliamentary oversight drastically reduced. SAPS will become Cele’s armed forces.
The line between the law and the exercise of political power by the executive are fading fast, and the deployment of internal security and police forces are playing a heightened role in governance.
Action Society believes Bheki Cele should be removed from office. One of our arguments is that Cele is actively building a police state. Please complete this poll to add to our arguments.
