Action Society started the year with multiple court cases where we continue to provide support for the most vulnerable members of our communities. In one case, a toddler was scorched with boiling water, and in another, a teenage girl was raped by her uncle.
Violet: Raped by uncle
Action Society supported Violet*, a teenager who was raped by her uncle in 2019. This case has been particularly frustrating and has been postponed at least 12 times. The accused failed to appear in court last week and the case was postponed to 31 January for the accused to be at court and will then be rolled over for continuation on February 1 2024.
Alfredo April: Throat slit
The murder case of Alfredo April has taken a frustrating turn. Alfredo was killed after having his throat slashed last year. The case was withdrawn in the Malmesbury court this week due to insufficient evidence to link the suspect to the crime. AS will continue to monitor the ongoing investigation.
Langa toddler: Burnt with boiling water
In June last year, a toddler was playing with his friends in the Langa area when a 22-year-old woman came out of her house and threw hot water at him. The initial charge against the woman was assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH); however, the state changed the charge to attempted murder due to the injuries the victim suffered. Last week, the defence indicated they want to make certain representations and the matter has been postponed to 28 February 2024.
Violet is a pseudonym used to protect the identity of the victim.
