Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola and Police Minister Bheki Cele, along with their friends at G4S, should take money out of their own pockets to track down the convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester.
Their disregard for women’s safety and justice in South Africa was once again proved when neither G4S nor Cele could be bothered to turn up for The Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services’s briefing on the circumstances around Bester’s “embarrassing” escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre, on Tuesday.
“South Africa’s tax monies should not be wasted to cover up the failures and mistakes of the incompetent criminal justice system,” said Action Society’s Action Centre coordinator, Kaylynn Palm. “Lamola and Cele should be held accountable for Bester’s escape along with the relevant incompetent commissioners and G4S.
“We again reiterate the call to remove both these ministers from their positions, with immediate effect.”
Action Society has repeatedly raised concerns about the country’s criminal justice system and DNA backlog. We also believe that a skills audit should be done among senior managers of the relevant departments.
