Helen Zille on W Cape’s push for greater self-rule: The time is ripe, Pretoria’s failing state is on full display

In this wide-ranging interview, political heavyweight Helen Zille unpacks the thinking behind a multi-stakeholder group established this week which intends wresting power away from Pretoria to the Western Cape government. There are segments in SA’s Constitution which argue that in areas where the State is failing, there’s a legal obligation on local government to take over. Leading the brief is police services, but its focus also includes restoring the collapse of rail services – and the ability of the provincial premier to call referendums.
