The murder case of Alwaba Sondara continued at the Paarl Regional Court on Thursday and Friday where the Head of Department at Khayelitsha Hospital testified. The case has been postponed to 2 August 2024 for judgement.
The doctor presented the court with Alwaba’s hospital folder, detailing the injuries she had suffered during the brutal attack that took her life. According to the reports, she suffered severe injuries to her head, and other parts of her body. The head injury was so severe that she found it difficult to breathe, and required specialist intervention at Tygerberg Hospital.
The prosecutor proved a pattern of serious abuse due to the injuries Alwaba sustained over a long period of time during their relationship.
On Friday, the trial continued, and the suspect’s defence made an admission in terms of section 220 of the CMA. He admitted to kicking and punching Alwaba and said a cabinet fell on her, and she later died as a result of the injuries.
“It’s been a long journey for Alwaba’s family. It has been especially hard for her father to listen to what has been done to his daughter and how severe her injuries were. We are satisfied that the case is moving forward and we are eagerly awaiting judgement. When listening to him explain what happened on the day, it is clear that he is lying and is only telling the court things that are in line with his version of the truth. From what we have heard and seen during this trial, it is very clear that this man belongs behind bars,” said Head of Action Society’s Action Centre, Kaylynn Palm.
