Mietjie Ontong’s murder accused’s shocking history of violent crime revealed; bail judgement expected today

Action Society will attend a crucial court appearance in the Mietjie Ontong murder case at the Wellington Magistrates Court today. The two men (aged 22 and 26) accused of killing the 63-year-old in October applied for bail and bail arguments were concluded on 1 November. Today is judgement day.

“It is in the public interest that these two thugs are kept off the streets. One of them has a previous murder conviction. There is a clear pattern of violence here and the young boy, who was tied up in the house during the attack, needs the assurance that he will not be targeted. Action Society’s position on bail in cases of violence against women and children are unwavering. Bail must be denied,” says Action Society’s Kaylyn Palm.

On 1 November, the court was still waiting for the post-mortem report, the DNA results from the victim’s clothing as well as the photos of the crime scene. “We hope to see some progress in court on this front as well,” concluded Palm.
