Personal alarms: when making noise may help

A personal alarm produces a loud sound intended to attract attention, startle someone or create an opportunity to move away.

It may be useful in some situations. It does not automatically summon help or stop an attacker.

Before you rely on one

Check:

  • how the alarm is activated;
  • whether you can use it with one hand;
  • where you will carry it;
  • whether the battery can be tested or replaced;
  • how easily it could activate accidentally; and
  • whether the sound is still strong enough.

An alarm attached to the bottom of a bag may take too long to find. Keep it somewhere accessible, while protecting it from accidental activation.

Test it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Warn the people around you and protect your hearing during any test.

Understand what the sound can and cannot do

The alarm may:

  • draw the attention of nearby people;
  • interrupt or startle someone;
  • signal that you need help; or
  • give you a moment to move away.

It may be less effective in an isolated area, a noisy environment or a place where people cannot identify where the sound is coming from.

Some people may also assume that the noise is a car alarm or accidental activation.

Use the moment

If activating the alarm creates an opportunity, move towards other people or a safer place. Ask for help clearly.

Do not remain in danger to see whether someone responds.

A personal alarm is a way to make noise. It is not a direct line to the police, private security or emergency services unless the specific device includes a monitored response service.
