Demand Urgent Action to Address the Violent Crime Crisis in South Africa

To: The Honourable President and Minister of Police

We, the undersigned, call on our government to take immediate and decisive action to combat the escalating violence and the tragic loss of life in our country.

In 2024 alone, South Africa recorded a staggering 26 232 murders, surpassing the toll of violence in global conflict zones like Gaza. This shocking statistic highlights a humanitarian crisis that demands our government’s attention and action.

Action Society is calling for the establishment of a dedicated SAPS task force to tackle the backlog of gender-based violence cases. Action Society’s commitment to funding forensic support has helped speed up investigations, proving that civil society is crucial in advancing justice.

By expediting forensic processes, Action Society will not only assist SAPS in solving cases more efficiently but also reduce the emotional and psychological burden on victims and their families. The organisation’s public-private partnership with SAPS will be a testament to the power of collaboration in improving public safety and restoring faith in the justice system.

We believe that no South African should live in fear of violence in their own country. While our government takes international stands against violence, it must also prioritise the safety and lives of its citizens. It is time for action—our lives depend on it!

By signing this petition, we declare our commitment to stand against the violence that plagues our nation and demand that our government uphold its duty to protect its citizens.

Together, we can make a difference

Let’s raise our voices and call for urgent action to end the crisis of violent crime in South Africa!
