Action Society was joyful after a long day at the Paarl Regional court on Friday as the killer of Alwaba Sondara, Asive Kulwane, was handed a sentence of 20 years direct imprisonment after a more than two year long battle for justice following her murder.
She was only 20 years old when she died in hospital after she was brutally beaten by her boyfriend on 18 December 2021. After he first beat her, he took her to the Khayelitsha hospital and fled the area. She was later taken to Tygerberg hospital where she remained in a coma until she succumbed to her injuries on 12 January 2022.
Alwaba’s killer is a very sick and dangerous man who should be permanently removed from society. On 21 June, the doctor presented the court with Alawaba’s hospital folder, detailing the injuries she had suffered during the brutal attack that took her life. According to the reports, she suffered severe injuries to her head, and other parts of her body. The head injury was so severe that she found it difficult to breathe, and required specialist intervention at Tygerberg Hospital.
The prosecutor proved a pattern of serious abuse due to the injuries Alwaba sustained over a long period of time during their relationship.
“Alwaba’s family can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing their daughter’s killer is behind bars. Since March 2022, this young woman’s father had to face his daughter’s killer time and time again, reliving the worst day of his life. Now is the time for him to heal and cherish the happy moments he had with his beautiful daughter,” said Head of Action Society’s Action Centre, Kaylynn Palm.
