Belhar mother shot and killed while walking kid to school

Action Society was at Bellville court on 19 January 2023, assisting the family of Lauren Kennedy, who was murdered in Belhar. 

She was taking a child to school in October last year when she was shot in the head, allegedly by her abusive ex-boyfriend. 

The suspect has made a few appearances in the Bellville Magistrates Court. The matter has now been postponed to 27 February 2023, and he will then appear in the regional court.

Khayelitsha woman killed with a screwdriver

Action Society has attended two court cases in the space of six days relating to Nosiphiwo James in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court. 

She was allegedly stabbed to death by her boyfriend using a screwdriver in May 2022, on Mother’s Day. 

On 13 January, the matter was on the court roll; however, due to loadshedding, the case was postponed to 20 January. On 20 January, Action Society was again present to support the family. The matter has been postponed to 24 January as the docket was not in court. The prosecutor has requested to have the docket on the next court date.

Durbanville minor raped

Action Society assisted the family of a girl who was raped last year – at the Bellville Magistrates Court. The suspect appeared in court on 16 January. The young girl was playing on the trampoline at the Durbanville sports field when her cousin raped her in November 2022.

The matter has been postponed to 16 March 2023. 

 

Strand woman badly beaten by her boyfriend

Action Society was in court in Strand on 20 January, supporting a woman whose boyfriend beat her up severely. 

The woman was assaulted in September last year by her new boyfriend. According to her, the accused beat her after he had a ‘fight ‘with her ex-boyfriend.

The accused beat the woman so severely that she had to get stitches in her face.

The man was granted bail of R500 last year. The matter has been postponed to 23 February 2023 for consultation.
