The past two weeks in court have once again highlighted a deeply concerning pattern. Intimate partner violence continues to escalate, often with devastating consequences, while repeat offenders move through the system without sufficient intervention to prevent further harm.
These are not isolated incidents. They reflect a cycle where known risks are not adequately managed and where victims remain exposed despite previous offences, warning signs, or clear escalation in violence.
From a parolee committing another rape, to violent attacks on intimate partners that nearly end in death, these cases point to the urgent need for stronger safeguards, faster processes, and a justice system that responds decisively to repeat and high-risk offenders.
Below is a summary of the cases monitored by Action Society over the past two weeks.
WYNBERG REGIONAL COURT
Nine-year-old Lavender*, raped by parolee

There has been no movement in the case against a child rapist who reoffended while on parole, because the accused is still awaiting placement in Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital for mental observation. The case appeared on 9 April 2026, where the court learned that the placement has not been finalised. The matter was postponed to 12 May 2026.
The victim in this case, a nine-year-old girl we call Lavender*, was the convicted child rapist’s second victim. He assaulted her in Hanover Park in May 2025 while out on parole for abusing a ten-year-old child in 2008. The case has fuelled calls for stricter parole conditions for violent offenders and the publication of the National Register of Sexual Offenders to the community.
MITCHELL’S PLAIN MAGISTRATE’S COURT
Micha Renge: Attempted murder, strangulation

The bail judgement in the attempted murder case against a Mitchell’s Plain man was delivered on 26 March 2026. Bail was denied. The accused allegedly strangled his ex-girlfriend, 21-year-old Micha Renge, with a belt in December 2025 near the Mnandi Beach canal, and again at her home in Westridge.
After the bail judgement, the matter appeared in court again on 31 March 2026 and was postponed to 8 May 2026 for further investigation.
CAPE TOWN REGIONAL COURT
Rosemary*: Almost killed by lawyer boyfriend

Action Society is closely monitoring the trial of a Cape Town man, a practising lawyer, who was arrested on 4 July 2024 after allegedly beating, kicking, choking, and attempting to suffocate his former partner, Rosemary*. The assault occurred on 25 June 2024.
He fled the scene but was later apprehended and charged. He now stands accused of attempted murder. The case was meant to continue on 8 April 2026, but the accused’s legal representative was absent, leading to a stern warning by the magistrate against further delays. The trial is now scheduled to continue on 4 May 2026.
GEORGE REGIONAL COURT
Sivenathi Toto: Left permanently disabled by revenge attack

Sive was just 23 years old when she was attacked on 26 August 2022 in Lawaaikamp, George. According to reports, the accused, Shaun Madonono, had earlier lost a fight to Sive’s boyfriend. In retaliation, he allegedly broke into Sive’s home, dragged her to his residence, and assaulted her until she lost consciousness.
He then dumped her near a petrol station on Nelson Mandela Boulevard, where she was later found by a petrol attendant. The consequences of that attack have been catastrophic. Sive suffered severe brain damage and is now non-verbal, permanently wheelchair-bound, and entirely dependent on others for daily care. She will never be the same again.
The matter appeared in the George Regional Court on 31 March 2026. The trial will continue on 19 June 2026.
