Action Society is shocked and angered by the horrific murder of a woman allegedly by her ex-boyfriend, Sibusiso Lawrence, from Scottburgh, KwaZulu-Natal. The suspect is accused of killing her and posting graphic content of her body online on Tuesday.
Lawrence is alleged to have posted a video on Facebook, which has since gone viral, confessing to the crime. He also shared a graphic photo of the victim, showing her with her throat apparently slit.
Police confirmed that officers responded to reports of a murder on a gravel road in the Malangeni area of Umzinto. The body of the 25-year-old woman was found lying in the middle of the road. Reports indicate that Lawrence abandoned his car at the scene, leaving behind the lifeless body of his girlfriend. On Wednesday, police discovered the suspect’s body hanging from a tree in what is believed to be a suicide.
Head of Action Society’s Action Centre, Kaylynn Palm described the murder and the online content allegedly posted by the suspect as deeply disturbing. “It is unacceptable and heartbreaking that she had to endure such a brutal death, followed by the indignity of having such content shared online. The levels of violence in our country are alarming. We cannot allow this violence to become normalised in our society.”
Palm further highlighted the harsh reality faced by women in South Africa. “The truth is, women are not safe. In this country, their bodies have become crime scenes. According to the latest crime statistics, between July and September 2024, a total of 957 women were murdered—an average of 11 women every day.”
