Action Society calls on members of the media to attend the upcoming court appearance in the high-profile #BlueLightMafia case, set to continue on Thursday, 11 September 2025, at the Randburg Regional Court, Court 11. On this day, the defence representing the eight accused members of a SAPS VIP protection unit will argue a Section 174 application, seeking to have the charges dismissed on the grounds of “insufficient evidence.” Action Society has condemned this as yet another delay tactic in a long series of attempts to obstruct justice.
The so-called BlueLightMafia made headlines when video footage circulated of heavily armed SAPS protection officers assaulting motorists and damaging their vehicle on a major Gauteng roadway. Charges including assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property were enrolled, but the case has been plagued by postponements and procedural manoeuvres ever since. Action Society maintains that these repeated delays amount to an abuse of process, denying victims and the public the closure they deserve.
The Section 174 application was initially meant to be argued in August, but outstanding transcripts from the hearings held on 31 July, 1 August, and 20–22 August 2025 once again stalled proceedings. With these transcripts now finalised, the matter will be argued on 11 September 2025, with the application expected to run for approximately four hours. Should the application fail, the prosecution has reserved the week of 6 November 2025 in its entirety for the continuation of the trial, with all parties having committed to proceed on those dates.
“We urge the court to dismiss this application so that the evidence in the case can be used to bring justice,” said Juanita du Preez, spokesperson for Action Society.
