The fourth suspect in the gang-rape of a deaf woman appeared before the Bishop Lavis Court today. Lily* was reportedly gang-raped by four men in Cape Town in December last year and Action Society has fought tooth and nail with the family since August to get to this point. The matter will continue on 12 October at the Parow Regional Court.
“The family made contact with us to assist with the matter, since they’ve experienced challenges, especially when it came to a sign-language interpreter for consultation. We are pleased that the Department of Justice has indicated that they are on board with a sign-language interpreter and will be present at court,” said Action Society’s Kaylynn Palm.
Action Society is glad that a sign-language interpreter has been made available for the woman, however the fact remains that it has taken much too long for the court to get to this point and led to multiple postponements and the delay of justice.“All we would like to see is that the matter is taken seriously, and that ultimately the woman sees justice,” concluded Palm.
